Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an inter-institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe. The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995. ITRE is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface and air transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Assistant works with other staff in ITRE's Highway Systems Group on various state-level and national-level projects. Day-to-day activities may include independently supporting and executing equipment installations in a field setting; data analysis; and drafting interim and final project reports. Projects may include signal systems, freeway operations, connected and autonomous vehicle-infrastructure interaction, safety, and alternative intersections. The Research Assistant is expected to take a key role in data collection activities and analysis. The selected candidate will be expected to start with immediate responsibilities for ongoing projects. The Research Assistant will be required to travel to field sites for data collection
Minimum Education/Experience: M.S. in Civil, Industrial, or Systems Engineering or a related field; OR a B.S. in Civil, Industrial, or Systems Engineering or a related field with 3 or more years of relevant experience.
Department Required Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite to include Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to work independently and conduct research and literature review tasks. Strong communication skills to communicate well with project team members and project clients in written and oral conversation.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: E.I.T or E.I. certification. Strong background in statistics and/or simulation. Transportation and/or research experience.
