Research Associate (Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory)
General Description of Position: The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Research Associate. This position will be responsible for managing BSL2 and BSL3 virus laboratories. Responsibilities include supervising and assisting with research projects, performing and assisting others with lab techniques, ordering laboratory supplies, and overseeing laboratory personnel. -Manage BSL2 and BSL3 virus laboratories to include: writing and maintaining SOPs, detailed laboratory notebook, and detailed compliance records. Manage microbial detection array testing through KSVDL, including management of testing supplies, performing testing, data analysis and interpretation, and assisting with manuscript and proposal preparation.
-Supervision and teaching of technicians, undergraduates and related personnel. Management and participation in swine trials, to include organizing and scheduling of personnel performing daily health evaluations, sample collection, and sample processing. Maintain detailed animal health and data records from swine studies.
-Perform and assist others with laboratory techniques to include: PCR/RT-PCR, recombinant DNA techniques, protein expression, DNA/RNA/peptide sequence alignment and analysis, viral titrations and inoculum preparation, sample processing, and statistical analysis.Required Minimum Qualifications: - This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 5 years of relevant work experience or a Master's degree in a related field plus 1 year of relevant work experience. Must have ability to use hardware and software specific to assigned laboratory duties.
- Candidate must have experience and skills in overseeing research projects, as well as good analytical skills and oral and written communication skills. Must be familiar with experimental design techniques, maintaining accurate data records, data analysis, proposal preparation and manuscript preparation. Good communication skills, both oral and written, are required.Preferred Qualifications: - Candidate with previous knowledge, experience, and skills in developing and performing diagnostic assays, experience and skills in next generation sequencing, a track record of publication in high quality journals, and experience working with swine is preferred.
