Provide strategic direction, manage and develop long range plans impacting a major area of an organization, school or unit. Partner with senior management to visualize and develop finance and accounting policy and strategy.
The International Controller will lead the finance/accounting operations team within the Global Business Services department of Financial Management Services. The role will report to the University Treasurer, and have management responsibility for international accounting and tax functions for Stanford's growing legal entity footprint. This is a hands-on accounting role requiring experience in international accounting, financial reporting, operations and systems. The International Controller will work closely and collaboratively with the client-facing consulting and risk identification/assessment/management function within the Global Business Services team. CORE DUTIES*: Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the functioning beyond the immediate unit Consult and advise senior leadership on financial issues, compliance, and risk management.Provide University-wide leadership and oversight for global financial issues, including implementation of a SAAS-based global accounting platform.Design and deliver both short and long term complex, comprehensive analyses and high level strategic modeling; provide advice to support senior leadership decisions.Develop cost models for global operations, and recommend funding options.Oversee execution of all budgets in area of responsibility. Manage business operation and administration of a major school or unit.Lead and communicate operational plans and strategy for area of responsibility; provide information and context to leadership.Partner with other leadership to establish the appropriate programs to ensure controls are created and maintained to safeguard assets.Oversee the programs, processes, and polices designed to provide a strong system of internal controls to protect and steward university resources; establish the appropriate "tone-at-top" to safeguard assets and head compliance initiatives for the organization.Together with key stakeholders, refine and implement policy, procedure and internal control frameworks for in-country global operations.Recommend, negotiate, and influence issues related to university and related subsidiaries international accounting policy; provide strategy, vision, and direction with wide scope and impact.Represent university to external organizations within the context of the role, typically one of an extremely complex nature.Champion major initiatives; lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.Implement new cloud-based global accounting platformDirect efforts of managers; develop those in leadership positions and in the leadership pipeline. Develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility.Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, manage performance, and determine staffing needs. * - Other duties may also be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Master's degree or Certified Public Accountant/Chartered Accountant and at least eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.Knowledge and ability to apply, interpret, and implement GAAP.Knowledge of and ability to apply IFRS reporting standards. Experience with preparation of IFRS-based financial statements.Knowledge and understanding of accounting systems, including experience in implementing accounting systems for global use.Knowledge of and ability to apply international tax principles.Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.Advanced analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.Advanced leadership and strategic management skills.Demonstrated experience managing people and in strategic management. Certifications and Licenses:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less. Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
