Stanford University's Haas Center for Public Service serves as the hub of Cardinal Service, a campus-wide initiative to make service a distinctive feature of a Stanford education. The Haas Center inspires and prepares students to create a more just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships.


JOB PURPOSE: The Cardinal Commitment Program Director is primarily responsible for advising and support of student public service organizations in connection with Cardinal Commitment programming. The Director engages student groups in the principles of ethical and effective service and public service pathways.

Administer, implement, and interpret university and department policies and procedures on issues regarding student life and advising. Identify, clarify, and resolve highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment.


CORE DUTIES*:
  • Provide guidance and counsel, oversee and develop a wide range of programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs.
  • Work closely with leaders of student service groups to facilitate knowledge, skills and dispositions that enable them to engage others in sustained service commitments to issues and organizations.
  • Develop and implement innovative approaches to supporting student service groups that aligns with Cardinal Commitment.
  • Facilitate public service trainings and workshops in concert with colleagues.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for Cardinal Commitment events and programming, including the Cardinal Commitment Community of Practice.
  • Administer an area or program in student services, evaluate and recommend decisions on program eligibility. Review decisions recommended by other staff.
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Develop and Implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university liaison represent department and university at meetings and events.
  • Provide advice to students on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to other departments; represent unit/department.
  • Lead, create and contribute to development of business practices and organizational change to improve processes and workflow.
  • Serve as a key member of university wide teams and projects.
  • May train and supervise other staff, volunteers and temporary workers. * - Other duties may also be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Advanced degree in student development, higher education, or related field preferred.
    • Understanding of and experience with principles and practice of student development, community service, and service-learning in the higher education context.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, tact, discretion and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive experiences and build community among different groups in university and/or community settings.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
