Life Science Technician 1 at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station, in Pacific Grove, CA. One year fixed term 100% FTE position. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the technician will assist with research investigating oceanographic variability and ecological responses within coastal fishing communities that have committed to marine conservation through marine reserves. This research is conducted collaboratively with the Mexican non profit marine conservation organization Comunidad y Biodiversidad, as well as oceanographers at Stanford and the University of Georgia. The selected candidate will spend considerable time doing fieldwork in Baja California, Mexico. The position will also include grant reports, database maintenance and management, and data analysis.


Technician duties include:

  • Conduct field studies, including underwater ecological monitoring, the deployment and maintenance of oceanographic sensors, and the conduction of ecological experiments using scuba.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments and process samples (e.g., from recruitment collectors)
  • Maintain databases, conduct data analyses, and co-develop an App to make data available and usable by fishers
  • Organize project agenda, travel plans, keep control of deadlines and maintain the communication with non-Stanford project partners;
  • Assist in all the phases of the publication and outreach process including writing projects report, research proposal, project presentations, drafts for the media and contents for project and lab websites;
  • Contribute to lab and equipment maintenance.
Required qualifications include advanced scuba qualification, extensive experience in ecological monitoring and field experiments, and work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team. Because of the setting of the field locations, and the international nature of this project, bilingual skills (Spanish and English) are desirable. The successful applicant will be highly organized, have attention to detail, be able to work as an independent part of a team, and have basic understanding of, and facility with, standard computer software programs including MS-Office and R statistical language.
