The Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery Advanced Practice Provider will provide medical and surgical care for adult patients requiring metabolic and weight loss surgery under the direct supervision of the designated supervising physician(s).The APP will provide preoperative, operative, and postoperative care and be involved with the care of the patient in any role which the supervisory physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, medical center regulations, delineation of privileges, in combination with the training, knowledge, skills and experience.
This position will have six (6) independent clinic sessions weekly with group and individual appointment templates and will cover Weight Loss Surgery clinics in Durham and Raleigh.

Duke Regional Hospital and Duke Ambulatory Surgical Center

Inpatient/outpatient Surgical Job Responsibilities/Activities

• Evaluates pre and postoperative patients in the clinic setting

• Performs history/ physical examinations and consultations

• Writes admission and perioperative orders including consultations

• Records/documents progress notes, procedure notes, and brief operative notes

• Coordinates/communicates patient care with nursing staff

• Participates in patient/family education

• Communicates with referring/consulting housestaff and physicians

• Participates in daily patient rounds

• Assists in all areas of operative patient care

• Initiates orders for medications/intravenous fluids

• First assists the surgeon throughout metabolic and weight loss surgery surgical procedures as needed.

• Troubleshoots postoperative clinical emergencies and initiates appropriate emergent interventions when surgeon(s) not available; then updates the surgeon(s) of the patient's condition as soon as possible.

• Initiates/participates in resuscitation of patients ( by ACLS standards )

• Participates in determination and communication of discharge plans for patients.

• Dictates discharge summaries/participates in medical chart maintenance

• Participates in follow-up care for discharged patients

Prescriptive Privileges: Responsibilities will include prescribing medications for inpatients and outpatients; both narcotic and non-narcotic agents used for the treatment of metabolic and weight loss surgery surgical patients. These privileges will be in compliance with the regulations of the North Carolina Medical Board, federal laws, and Duke University Health System regulations governing the activities of the medical staff of Duke University Health System.

Access to Supervising Physician: The APP will have access to the supervision of the designated supervising physician(s) and/or the designated alternate supervising physician(s) on a twenty-four hour basis, either by direct or electronic contact (telephone, beeper, etc.).There will be designated back-up alternate supervising physician(s) for emergencies, vacations, etc.

Process of Evaluation: Initially the metabolic and weight loss surgery physician assistant will meet with the supervising physician(s) on a monthly basis for review of training/performance progress. This system provides a basis for the metabolic and weight loss surgery physician assistant and the supervising physician(s) to establish an ongoing job performance/progress system.

Education
Work requires a bachelor's degree in Health Science and a Physician Assistant Certificate of Registration with the North Carolina Medical Board or be certification eligible, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants -OR- completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
NP - Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.

PA - Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
