Overview

Princeton University's Office of Information Technology is seeking a Lead Network Automation Engineer to join its Networking and Monitoring Services group. The lead network automation engineer provides leadership over planning, designing and developing automation solutions for network services to the University community. This position develops and designs device models, service models and reusable software libraries covering networking concepts including switching, routing, security, deep packet inspection, load balancing, SDN, NFV, network overlays. As a member of the Networking and Monitoring Services group, the automation engineer is also responsible for managing and monitoring the network infrastructure, analyzing and resolving network problems, and continually improving the network and system infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with and provide technical leadership to Office of Information Technology (OIT) IT staff and University departments for designing, architecting and deploying tools for the automation of network services
  • Develop strategies, identify requirements and define specifications for automation systems
  • Manage complex projects and provide technical leadership for all automation projects involving networking and monitoring
  • Provide advanced technical programming guidance for developing network automation solutions based on best practices and a model driven approach
  • Consult on developing and deploying a network automation platform
  • Design and architect solutions in collaboration with DevOps and systems and storage teams
  • Design and develop reusable software modules to help customers build network services
  • Establish automated processes to monitor applications, minimize failures or degraded performance, and alert administrators to problems
  • Work with OIT colleagues to design and implement redundant and survivable networks and monitoring systems in accordance with disaster recovery and emergency planning teams
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting assistance and routinely collaborate with University departments and OIT teams on operational issues, projects, and initiatives
  • Provide routine, on-call support outside of normal business hours to perform network upgrades, execute maintenance changes, and resolve emergency issues
  • Establish and maintain standards, policies, documentation, and logs for networking and monitoring systems
  • Investigate and respond to complaints about abuses involving networking systems
  • Monitor vendor and security organization bulletins for security vulnerabilities and bug fixes
  • Apply critical bug fixes, security updates and configuration changes to automation systems
  • Review and test backup and restore procedures for networking and monitoring systems
  • Review networking and system log files and resolve any issues identified
  • Proactively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously develop administrative and technical skills.
  • Research emerging networking and automation trends and provide recommendations for future expansion and improvements to networking and monitoring systems


Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working as a network engineer engaged in advanced scripting in Python and/or Perl and providing technical leadership
  • Experience with providing automation solutions in a medium- to large-sized network and monitoring infrastructure
  • Expert-level programming experience in Python or Perl
  • Experience with IETF YANG, or other similar modeling language
  • Proficiency in shell scripting
  • Solid understanding of software design principles including object-oriented concepts
  • Demonstrated innovative thinker and creative problem solver
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in network design and operations
  • Demonstrated skill in solving complex problems in a network environment, particularly in the areas of packet switching, IP routing, wireless communications and IP-based telephony/VoIP
  • Extensive understanding of network protocols, including TCP/IP
  • Experience with Cisco equipment and IOS configurations
  • Experience with controller-based wireless network infrastructure
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to multiple operating systems and platforms
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to respond to shifting priorities, and to work efficiently under the pressure of critical problems and deadlines
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours and on-call to perform network maintenance and support unexpected critical network failures
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced networking certifications
  • Experience working in higher education

Education
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field required (Master's degree a plus)
