DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and partnering closely with the Editorial Director and president's Chief of Staff, the Communications Manager develops a wide variety of internal and external communications, including presidential communications (speeches, talking points, presentations), features and news for the University magazine, Web content, blog/newsletter articles, and other projects.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Coordinates with President's Office, CCO, and/or other cross-University offices and individuals to develop specific internal and external communications for the president. Types of audiences/events include: Board of Trustees; Staff and Administrators Assembly; faculty and student events; Commencement, Homecoming, and other major events; local clubs and organizations; professional conferences, etc.
• Researches, analyzes, and interprets complex information from a variety of higher education and internal resources to develop president's communications, including speeches, talking points, briefings, presentations, reports, papers. Remains current on issues related to higher education. Uses postsecondary data gathered from reputable sources to present information effectively and accurately.
• Both develops from scratch and reworks existing presidential communications. Edits and proofreads materials from rough draft or verbal instruction; independently composes items in support of the president.
• Collaborates with media relations team on presidential outreach/PR opportunities; researches, proposes, and prepares materials for speaking opportunities and other forums for the president.
• Works with the Editorial Director to conceive, write, and edit features and news stories for the tri-annual University magazine and serves as the magazine's deputy Editor, partnering with the Director/Editor on overall strategy and development of magazine content and ensuring strategic, creative, quality, and production goals are met.
• Creates reader survey tool to help analyze effectiveness of magazine content, format, design, and support of Advancement and general external communication goals.
• Personally proposes, compiles, and writes/edits content, or guides and coordinates University Communications colleagues in creating content for various vehicles; e.g., blog, internal/external news vehicles, etc. Helps ensure production and distribution per agreed schedules.
• Collaborates with the Director, Creative Services and College of Arts & Sciences Admissions to write recruitment marketing content for print and online vehicles.
• Collaborates with colleagues using department-wide project management and other tools.
• Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree is required, ideally in a communications or marketing-related program. A minimum of 5 years of directly relevant experience is required, preferably in higher education. Stellar writing and editing skills are required. Executive-level interaction and communication support experience highly desired. Occasional work outside of regular hours is required for coverage (i.e., preparation of content and reporting) of campus news or events for publicity, promotion, and other communication or marketing purposes. Other desired knowledge, skills and abilities include: Communications and marketing, public relations, and editorial/journalism (especially magazine production) and creative functions. Independent judgment, experience working autonomously, and highly-developed communication and interpersonal skills. California Driver's license and a good driving record are required.
