Job Description

Montclair State University is seeking a creative, outcomes-oriented individual to fill the position of Director of Annual Giving. The annual giving program is a critical element in the ongoing success of the University's development operation. A talented and dynamic individual is sought for this position to assist in bringing the program to new heights.

The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for planning, managing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive annual giving program (including direct mail, online giving, call center, crowdfunding/micro campaigns, targeted constituent giving programs, personal solicitation and volunteer management) focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support from alumni, friends, faculty/staff, parents and students.

The Director develops long- and short-term strategies in support of University philanthropic priorities; effectively identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards prospects to increase philanthropic support for The Fund for Montclair State, and consistently works to upgrade donor support levels and grow the leadership/major gift pipeline. The Director plays a key role in expanding the annual giving program in regards to the number of donors and the levels of giving, setting objectives, timelines and metrics focused on increasing revenue/number of donors; and building a culture of philanthropy among all constituents.

The Director manages internal staffing and external consulting resources, as well as oversees the implementation of fundraising initiatives, across the Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement team.

S/he will work closely with leadership, the Assistant Vice President for Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement and the Associate Vice President for Development to establish departmental goals and provide program analysis/metrics review through dashboard reporting and program benchmarking.



Qualifications & Requirements

Requirements include: a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years relevant professional experience in annual giving / fundraising, preferably in higher education. This position requires a broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising including the ability to participate in all aspects of the giving cycle, as well as a solid understanding of best practices within the field of annual giving, including call, direct mail, online, crowdfunding and in-person solicitation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including handling confidential information with tact and professionalism, as well as the ability to work with all levels of the University community, including donors, volunteers, students, faculty, department heads and deans is required. Project management and organizational skills are essential, including the ability to develop action plans and budgets. Attention to detail is critical. The candidate must possess high energy and have the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, while balancing multiple projects and performing assignments accurately to a timely and successful completion. Weekend and evening work, as well as the ability to travel, is required.
