Basic Function:
This is a highly skilled union position within the trades group. The Journeyman Plumber shall be required to install, alter, maintain and trouble shoot all types of piping for water, sanitary, and gas systems and their related fixtures and assemblies; as well as all domestic water heating equipment. Further, this position will be required to work as a maintenance mechanic in all areas assigned to predominantly the Plumbing Department and other departments as determined by Supervisor/Manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of the MEP Manager and supporting Trades Supervisor’s and guidance of the Lead Plumber to ensure that the needs of the university are met in a professional manner.
  • Undertakes work assignments from oral and written instructions, sketches, blueprints or related diagrams.
  • Plans and lays out jobs, including material needs. Provides information to management on equipment and systems operational and status concerns.
  • Maintain adequate inventory per Management or lead instructions, capability of understanding the importance of a preventative maintenance program, including systematic drain cleaning and maintain or assist in maintenance record keeping in School Dude work order system, logs and reports related to install plumbing equipment and related systems.
  • Work with counterparts in other respective trades to install new piping systems and maintain existing systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections of campus wide plumbing equipment to minimize deferred maintenance costs.
  • Recommends major repairs, replacements and overhauls and assists in such works.
  • Perform drain cleaning of buildings on preventative and emergency basis.
  • May be asked from time to time to perform work beyond his job classification in the role of Lead Plumber, in his absence.
  • Record all daily activities and status reports on the School Dude Work Order System. All time is recorded on Banner at the end of the normal work day.
  • Ability to work overtime, off hours call-ins, and emergency response as job requires.
  • Represents the University in matters where certification or licensing is required.

    Position Requirements

  • High School, Trade or Vocational school degree required.
  • Massachusetts Journeymen Plumber’s License.
  • Valid Massachusetts Drivers License.
  • Minimum of four year commercial experience at the Journeymen level is preferred
  • Experience using power drain cleaning equipment in large scale commercial buildings. Flameless pipe connection technology. Pipe camera operation experience.
  • Mathematical ability and skill at reading sketches, blueprints, and plumbing diagrams.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs., climb stairs/ladders, reach/bend/squat/crawl.
  • Prior experience working in a higher educational setting, and good customer service skills are preferred.

    The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions work near moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
    The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and the noise level in this environment is normal. There is a limited risk of electrical shock.
  • This position’s work week consists of 4 consecutive 10 hour days, one of which being a weekend day, from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
