Columbus State University has an opening for a Communications Specialist located in the Office of University Relations. The successful candidate will protect and promote the university’s brand and messages through a wide variety of communication, including – but not limited to – managing the university’s social media presence, writing press releases, developing marketing plans and materials, and helping to direct the university’s overall public relations plan. This position will report to the Director of University Relations and will assist in office-related responsibilities and activities as requested. The selected candidate will coordinate with university personnel as appropriate, as well as help manage/coordinate media, advertising, public relations materials/strategies to effectively carry the university messages internally and externally.
As manager of the university’s social media operations, the successful candidate will be proactive and reactive on sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and other web-based vehicles as appropriate. The purpose of these efforts will be to use the university’s social media presence to promote CSU messaging, events, and content; and to respond as appropriate to ensure our social media presence is active, responsive and informative.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: monitoring standards and consulting with other departments on social media efforts and strategy; advising on ways to incorporate new technology with best market practices to align with the overall university marketing and public relations goals; maintaining the university’s online social media presence and assisting with other online content, including the website, pursuant to University messaging, content, and design templates and guidelines; assist with managing the production of communication materials, to include timeline development and writing copy, to build supporting graphics, design and layout, compatible with University messaging, content, and design standards and templates; producing and distributing finished communications and other specific ongoing projects, such as, the Annual Report and VIP postcards, and annual report monitoring and development for the department; collaborating with staff and faculty to monitor and assist in production of communication materials and online messaging; ensuring consistency and clarity with University branding, messaging, content, and design standards and templates; planning, writing, preparing, and/or reviewing press releases and articles – as needed – to be sent to the media or used in Columbus State University publications; and all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field from an accredited college or university; and a minimum of five years’ solid writing and editing experience. The successful candidate must possess experience in social media technology; design experience and familiarity with a variety of supporting software; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; attention to detail and accuracy; a good track record in managing projects and working with various team members to accomplish common objectives; a demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word), Constant Contact, and a sound understanding of graphic design software, such as, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, and HTML; strong project management skills; the ability to work under tight deadlines and extra hours as needed on assignments; the ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; great responsiveness to questions; listens well to seek clarification; the ability to demonstrate group representation skill; participates in meetings; and a demonstrated ability to read and interpret written information.
