  Position Information  

This position is in the Management Personnel Plan (Administrator I) and earns management benefits including medical, dental, vision, $100,000 life insurance plan, and the CalPERS pension plan.  For more information on benefits included for this position, please see the benefits summary.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

The Associate Director is a mid-level fundraising professional responsible for raising gifts ($25,000 and above) from parents of current and past students to support multiple initiatives on campus, including the Aztec Parents Fund, Colleges, scholarships, etc., and reports to the Senior Director, Regional Initiatives. The Associate Director is a member of the university’s development team.  He/she is responsible for implementing short and long term fundraising goals as part Campaign development plan, and is responsible for securing private voluntary support from individuals, corporate and foundation donors to the University.

The primary responsibility for this position is to raise major gifts from parents of current and past students. This position will work to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects. The Associate Director will manage a portfolio coordinating activities of prospect management, research, scholarship, annual and planned giving and corporate and foundation relations.  The Associate Director will actively conduct and prepare basic prospect research, developing profiles on major gift prospects, corporations, and foundations, summarizing verbally and in writing, pertinent and detailed information as it relates to university priorities and strategic plans. The Associate Director will work with the Senior Director, Regional Initiatives on strategies for prospects in his/her portfolio.  The Associate Director will work with the Senior Director, Regional Initiatives to define annual and long-term fundraising strategic plans and goals for the Parents Program.

Minimum Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree and three to four years of progressive development experience or related work, such as sales and community relations.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Experience working with volunteers and with corporate executives.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of interest in, and commitment to, higher education and philanthropy; articulate a compelling case for annual support of a public institution of higher education; demonstrate a high level of customer service, attention to detail, exceptional follow-through, and a can-do attitude; thrive in an environment of change; handle competing priorities in a complex development environment; and to represent San Diego State and University Development in a positive manner on campus and with external constituencies. 
  • Must have the ability to travel and attend off-campus appointments and events.
  • Flexibility to attend events during non-business hours 
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience raising major gifts of $25K and above.
  • Direct experience in personal gift solicitation and fundraising.
  • Experience in writing funding proposals.
  • Experience managing a large pool (150+) of major gift prospects.
  • Fund-raising experience in a large, complex university.
  • Ellucian Advance experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in upgrading of donors.
  • Experience with comprehensive and/or capital campaigns.
  • Master's degree.
