  Position Information  

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end six months and one day from the date of the appointment with the possibility for reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The Graphic Designer serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business assigned to the Marketing & Communications area in the Dean’s Office. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief Marketing Officer and lead the college’s creative efforts. The incumbent is responsible for artistic and graphic design and creation of print and multimedia materials. The incumbent will use both design and production elements to organize ideas visually to convey the desired impact and message to the target audience. The incumbent will conceptualize, design and create a wide range of materials including: printed materials; exhibits; training sessions; videos; web sites; and public information projects. This work will be used to reach a variety of internal and external audiences. In addition to aesthetic judgment and project management skills, the incumbent provides expertise in the development and evaluation of effective communication strategies and techniques.  The incumbent will keep updated with UX, IA, Wireframes, and advertising trends as well as keep updated with competitor advertising and campaigns.

  Compensation and Benefits  

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,089 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,717 - $6,034 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications 

Position requires foundation knowledge in the principles and techniques of artistic and graphic design as well as demonstrated design and artistic skills. This knowledge and skill normally is obtained through a college degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework. In addition, strong communication skills and the ability to use and maintain currency with applicable computer software packages and systems are essential to entering this classification.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university in graphic design or a related field

  • Three years of professional web design experience

  • Possess:

  • comprehensive knowledge of graphic design

  • production principles

  • communication theory

  • basic understanding of marketing and promotion concepts

  • superior skills in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Dependable and organized

  • Ability to:

  • work independently and with a team

  • plan, coordinate and direct graphic art communications projects

  • handle multiple priorities

  • consult and communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students

  • interpret and translate needs into effective visual formats

  • understanding and experience in UX Design

  • 3+ years designing as part of a marketing or creative team

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite and a sound understanding of InDesign / desktop publishing

  • Ability to create vector illustrations with different styles

  • Ability to interpret and translate needs into effective visual formats

  • Experience prototyping with CSS and HTML

  • Familiarity with current design trends, consumer platforms, with a keen understanding of how the two intersect

  • The ability to work across platforms and mediums

  • The work ethic to meet tight deadlines

  • The ability to think conceptually and execute efficiently

  • Openness to constructive feedback and a desire to constantly improve

  • An upbeat can-do attitude, eye for detail, and flexibility

  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to learn new skills as needed

  • Experience with UX a plus

  • Excellent communications skills plus strong attention to detail and proofing skills

  • Ability to prioritize a multitude of projects and complete them in a set time frame
