Essential Functions:
  • Work with Career Technical Education (CTE) faculty and students to improve students' retention, success, completion, and graduation;

  • Develop student success activities, recruitment, and orientation programs;

  • Monitor and report student success;

  • Maintain close working relationships with the Dean, Director of Nursing, faculty, students, and the community to achieve CTE program outcomes;

  • Develop and maintain student educational plans;

  • Develop and assess student learning outcomes to improve student learning;

  • Conduct assessments including interpretation of pre-requisite and application requirements for allied health programs;

  • Provide personal, career and educational counseling to individuals and groups;

  • Meet the special counseling needs of underrepresented student populations by implementing a comprehensive retention program;

  • Develop reports for progress monitoring activities;

  • Assist in the advancement of the institutions vitality and growth;

  • Provide presentations and workshops to CTE students; and

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Duties may include assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times including evening, weekends, or off campus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

    All candidates must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Counseling experience in a community college;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Cross cultural counseling experience;
  • Experience working with multicultural/diversity counseling issues;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students and staff;
  • Experience and knowledge of computer applications, online resources and technology related to counseling functions;
  • Professional experience providing a broad array of community college counseling services;
  • Knowledge of student success models/orientation programs for retention;
  • Knowledge of and experience with evaluation of student academic records; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its missions and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
177-181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $54,029 - $83,180 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
