Position Summary

Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) seeks a visionary and accomplished academic and administrative leader as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). The next ME Chair will report to the Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science and work closely with the leadership team of the University as the Institute continues to increase its impact and to fulfill its vision of being a world-class, student-centric research university. Qualified individuals will also be considered for an endowed chair position within SES. The Endowed Chair is expected to have a record of exemplary research, demonstrated leadership with building and managing a significant research enterprise, commitment to excellence in teaching, and a vision that will position the ME Department prominently at the national stage.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The department is the oldest and largest academic unit at Stevens, with roots dating back to the founding of ASME at Stevens. ME is one of the eight departments in the SES and plays a critical role in the success of the entire university. ME maintains a rigorous commitment to preparing the next generation of technology leaders by offering a multi-disciplinary, design-based education taught by 24 full-time faculty members with an intensive curriculum for its 700 undergraduate students and 270 graduate students. With four master's programs and a vibrant doctoral program in mechanical engineering, the department also offers 15 graduate certificates in diverse areas of special study. The ME Department is dedicated to supporting hands-on learning, research, and technology transfer that provides each student with invaluable, experiential knowledge.

The Department's interdisciplinary approach has allowed it to attract and retain world-class faculty and achieve prominence in five signature areas: Design and Manufacturing, Robotics and Control, Nanotechnology and multiscale systems, Thermal/Fluid/Energy Systems, and Bio-Engineering.

Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and an exemplary record of scholarly activities in a relevant field.
