Position Summary: Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletic Director, the Assistant Athletic Director for Event Management is responsible for leading the department's Event Management unit, overseeing all Varsity Athletic competitions. Athletics is a 28-sport program and oversees approximately 200 events; this includes directing and overall management responsibility for post-season play sponsored by the Atlantic Coast Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Throughout the Event Management process, this position is responsible for insuring and accommodating a safe environment for all student-athletes/participants, coaches, support staff and spectators; this includes regular season, post-season and special competitions, and other events held yearly at athletic department facilities. Competitions are held in more than eight indoor and outdoor facilities including 60,000 + Kenan Memorial Stadium, Dean E. Smith Center (22,000), and Carmichael Auditorium - a 7, 000 seat arena for women's basketball, wrestling, volleyball and gymnastics. Football operation alone requires comprehensive planning and implementation. Weather can often play havoc with athletic events requiring flexibility in dealing with delays or venue changes. Events are not limited to one per day. It is not uncommon to host a football game, an NCAA event and two Olympic sports contest on a single day. Thus, this position has ultimate authority for home athletic event management including planning, staffing and implementation. Critical to this role is the responsibility to develop, nurture, and maintain many vital relationships including, but not limited to, the Department of Transportation and Parking, University and Chapel Hill Police, Show Pros, South Orange Rescue Squad, Aramark Concessions, Volunteer Ushers, et al. Budget management is a critical component with oversight of a $1.25 million budget. Staff planning and supervision of a full time staff of four with responsibility for instituting a plan to provide a wonderful fan experience while presenting a gold standard for customer service for all. Lead and mentor staff members, internal and external, in all aspects of event and team management. Responsible to lead toward functional, supportive and efficient model for a unified command and emergency management.

Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Sports Administration preferred. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.
Qualification and Experience: Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in the following: Post Season (Conference & NCAA); Hosting experience including submitting bids; campus collaborations (including public relations and networking); external collaborations (Conference and NCAA); event management experience (preferably at a Power 5 institution) and/or professional /intercollegiate (public or private). Demonstrated management & leadership experience. Division 1 football and basketball event management experience preferred, experience with Olympic Sports event management helpful. Ability to manage multiple events (incl. facility and personnel management). Must exhibit keen awareness of risk management situations at major events. Ability to lead Diversity & Inclusion training. Provide customer service based on inventive planning; continuous improvement and systematic feedback, allocate and track resources to ensure maximum achievement and performance. Must demonstrate strong and effective interpersonal communication skills (verbal & written). Supreme attention to detail, strong communication and interpersonal abilities, and a high degree of initiative and ownership. Supervisory experience essential. Experience dealing with a high volume of events and often under stressful situations. Ability to understand and comply with NCAA and ACC rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment that requires independence and at times requires working as part of a team, and the ability to discern between the appropriate approach.
