Assistant Dean of Students for Race, Equity, and Identity

Goucher enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduates, 84% of whom live on campus, and 1,200 graduate students. We invite applications from collaborative, innovative, and dynamic candidates for the position of assistant dean of students for race, equity, and identity. The Center for Race, Equity, and Identity (CREI), now in its second year of existence, provides support, outreach, and advocacy for marginalized student populations, as well as education for the campus community around issues of equity and justice. The CREI serves student populations, including but not limited to: students of color, LGBTQIA-identifying, low-income, and first-generation students, disabled students/students with disabilities, and students with international backgrounds. The CREI fosters an environment in which marginalized students are affirmed and supported, in exploring and expressing their identities.
The assistant dean of students for race, equity, and identity reports directly to the vice president and dean of students, and functions as senior member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team. The assistant dean is responsible for comprehensive leadership of the CREI, providing vision, leadership, and a voice for the College’s student-facing efforts around matters of equity.
The assistant dean will:
- Facilitate student dialogue across varied points of view, providing opportunities to improve understanding, as well as reflect on experiences of difference and discoveries about power, privilege, marginalization, and oppression.
- Provide support and advocacy for, and education about, marginalized/oppressed populations, to include progressive programming and education models.
- Coordinate student orientation and mentoring programs and advise student affinity groups.
- Provide training and education opportunities for faculty and staff about affirming and supporting marginalized/oppressed student populations.
- Provide leadership for, coordinate, and continuallly evaluate the effectiveness of the Bias Education and Response Team (BERT), and other systems for addressing discriminatory actions towards students.
- Provide direct assistance, counsel, and support to students who connect with the CREI, making appropriate referrals to campus resources.
- As a leader in the Division of Student Affairs, undertake special projects as assigned by the VP/Dean, participate in the weekly “Mobile Dean” initiative and Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) meetings.
- Aid in collection of data regarding the success/retention of underrepresented populations, as well as learning outcomes for assessing the effectiveness of CREI programs.
- Supervise the assistant director for LGBTQIA students, the international student advisor, and oversee a meaningful CREI student employment program.
- Serve as a member of the "dean-on-call" rotation for evenings and weekends.
The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field; and two to four years of experience with increasing responsibility in the design and delivery of equity- and identity-oriented student programs and services in higher education, which acknowledge the intersectionality of experiences. Three to five years of such experience, on a full-time professional basis, is preferred. The position also requires excellent writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Also imperative is a knowledge of – and experience with – issues of race, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, and citizenship, critical race theory and gender theory, as well as a passion for issues of equity and justice.
