The Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied science at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate to work under the supervision of Dr. Gary Koenig.
The successful candidate will perform studies on the development of a new device and technique for the characterization of lithium-ion battery materials. Duties will include materials characterization including X-ray diffraction, surface area and pore volume analysis, optical characterization, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Karl-Fischer titration, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and other techniques. Electrochemical cell fabrication and characterization, including custom cell design, will be used extensively.
A PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field by the start date, with experience in battery materials and electrochemistry is required. Experience with most of the materials and electrochemical techniques in the above paragraph is required. Experience with intercalation materials synthesis and characterization is preferred. The applicant should also have a track record of mentor-ship of undergraduate and/or graduate researchers and a strong writing ability as evidenced by prior papers and grant/fellowship applications.
