Basic Function:
Seeds of STEM is a 4-year research project, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Entering its 3rd year, the project focuses on the development and pilot-testing of a Pre-K problem-based STEM curriculum that teaches young children (and their teachers) the process of problem solving. The project is a collaboration between WPI, the College of the Holy Cross, and the Worcester Head Start program.

The Research Scientist will oversee and take part in all Seeds of STEM research and dissemination activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • This 18-month Research Scientist position holds the following responsibilities:
    • Assist with project management
    • Work with project PIs to create and deliver PDs and curriculum interventions
    • Advise the team on study design and data collection plan
    • Participate in research instruments revision
    • Establish coding reliability for two observation rubrics
    • Lead data collection and analysis processes
    • Lead program evaluation research and implementation (including teacher interviews)
    • Attend and present at professional conferences and author scholarly publications
    • Lead grant proposal writing effort
    • Participate in all team meetings and take part in additional Seeds of STEM tasks that may arise

    Position Requirements

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. in science education, engineering education, teacher education, early childhood education, or a closely related field
    • An emerging record of scholarly productivity
    • Experience in education research methods (both qualitative and quantitative)
    • Experience in teacher education or teaching in early childhood setting

    Candidates will be evaluated on:

    • A strong background in STEM/Early education teaching & learning
    • A strong background in qualitative and quantitative educational research methods
    • Interest and experience teaching and learning in early childhood and high needs school settings
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
    • Effective project management and coordination skills
    • High level of initiative and ability to work independently
