Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University (GW) is seeking a Paralegal to join its Office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel (OGC). OGC provides quality legal, strategic and policy advice and counseling on a broad range of cutting edge issues that confront a large urban private research university. These matters include student and academic, litigation, business transactions, real estate and zoning, labor and employment, health affairs, intellectual property and technology transfer, international, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality paralegal and administrative support.

Excellent organization, research and writing skills are essential. This individual will have exceptional interpersonal skills, with an ability to work independently and on a team. Customer service, relationship management skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are a necessity.

This position will receive assignments and take direction from OGC attorneys and the Special Assistant to the SVP and General Counsel.

Paralegal Support
Under supervision of an attorney:

Assist with the review of contracts and agreements

Draft correspondence

Review agreements and other legal documents for appropriate composition, terminology, and grammar

Respond to subpoenas and records requests

Complete annual corporate filings and track compliance deadlines

Conduct legal and other research and prepare memoranda summarizing relevant laws and cases

Assist with client relations

Provide litigation support and assist with discovery

Maintain attorney files

Administrative Support:
Schedule meetings and maintain calendars for several attorneys

Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks such as assembling materials, preparing documents for mail or courier delivery, creating and updating spreadsheets and presentations, photocopying, typing, filing, and preparing documents for archives

Work proficiently with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 1 year of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Paralegal certificate and/or training

Strong independent thinking skills with strength in problem solving and the ability to initiate and offer constructive opinions and creative solutions to improve OGC case or matter management

Proven integrity and sound judgment

Attentive to details and the importance of outstanding customer service

Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, in order to communicate effectively with a diverse group of client representative offices, attorneys, and staff, providing information with courtesy and tact
