SR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT PENN MEDICINE
Duties: Serves as Senior Executive Director of Development for Penn Medicine's health system and provides leadership and day-to-day management for The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, as well as owned entities, twenty clinical departments, and priority centers and institutes through annual, major/leadership/principal, and corporate and foundation giving programs. The Senior Executive Director oversees a staff of thirty including two Senior Directors of Development, twenty-two directors (comprised of Directors, Associate Directors, and Assistant Directors), and six administrative staff.
Conceptualizes, plans, and executes a strategic and comprehensive program of fundraising including major gifts and grants (i.e., $100,000 and above), planned giving, corporate and foundation support, annual giving, and donor stewardship within the framework of top priorities for Penn Medicine's hospitals, patient programs, clinical departments, and centers and institutes. Directs strategies for over six priority council structures for the Health System, representing lead volunteers for Penn Medicine. Leads signature fundraising programs and priorities for Penn Medicine. This position oversees all fundraising related to Penn Medicine's Office of Signature Services - these efforts include Patient Facilitated Services, Executive Health, Penn Passport, and Global/International Medicine efforts. Where Global Medicine is concerned, this position oversees all of Penn Medicine's global fundraising activities.
This position is responsible for over $50 million in gift revenue annually.
As a senior-member of the Individual and Organizational Giving division team, the Senior Executive Director of Development works closely with the Chief Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Deputy Chief Advancement Officer, and Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) to translate health system-wide programs into persuasive proposals and compelling gift opportunities. The Senior Executive Director also plays an integral role in the planning and direction of the Penn Medicine Development and Alumni Relations department (PMDAR) serving a leadership role on the CAO's management team and helps to develop appropriate fundraising strategies to support the prerogatives that emerge from this senior-level group. The Senior Executive Director of Development also engages the Dean, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, CEOs of owned entities, board members, and volunteers in executing the required cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship initiatives.
Develops and maintains a comprehensive understanding of the educational, research, and clinical operations of Penn Medicine (including both the health system and the School of Medicine), and communicates these needs and priorities to funding prospects.
Personally manages and staffs a portfolio of key major gift level ($100,000 and above) donors and prospects; maintains frequent contact with these constituents while engaging institutional leadership-including the Dean of the School of Medicine, CEO of the Health System, and key members of the Penn Medicine and University administrative leadership-in appropriate donor and/or prospect related efforts. Additionally, engages key volunteer constituents, including members of select health system councils and committees, and the Penn Medicine Development Cabinet.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and over 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Strong leadership experience with demonstrated ability to mentor, manage, and motivate a team of experienced development professionals.
In-depth experience in and knowledge of both individual and organizational major gift/grant (i.e., $100,000 and above) fundraising in a higher education environment.
Achievement in a broad-based development leadership role in a complex organization--preferably during a campaign in a medical/academic medical center or scientific environment.
Superior oral and written communication skills reflecting ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling fundraising proposals.
Direct experience working with volunteers and volunteer groups, reflecting ability to recruit, motivate, and manage volunteer leadership.
Ability to articulate a compelling case for major philanthropic support for Penn Medicine's priority programs, projects, and activities to prospects.
Demonstrated effectiveness in managing multiple projects and solicitations simultaneously.
Ability to function effectively in a complex organizational environment demanding high energy level, discretion, patience, enthusiasm, and humor. Must be willing to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed
