Head, Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library
The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries are looking for a creative, dynamic librarian who understands the information needs of scientists as well as the ongoing evolution of library roles and services. The successful candidate for the Branch Head of the Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library is an innovative, collaborative, and forward-thinking librarian with a background in the sciences. The Branch Head leads a team of faculty and staff and is responsible for aligning branch library services and collections with the information needs of the Department of Geological Sciences, the Department of Geography, the Environmental Studies Program, as well as a system of world-class research institutes and centers. CU Boulder's Geosciences program is ranked 2nd in the world by U.S. News and World Report. This individual works collaboratively to provide, promote, manage, and evaluate library services, resources, and collections, and understands the research culture, data needs, and publication trends in the earth and environmental sciences.
The Branch Head reports to the Faculty Director of Sciences. Collectively, the Sciences Department initiates and advances departmental missions and objectives. These include developing student-centered learning opportunities, advancing the role of libraries as communal spaces for their disciplines, advocating for change in scholarly communication, raising awareness of contemporary research data issues, and building collections that are responsive to user needs. The Branch Head is a vital member of the team of science librarians that supports the teaching and research in the College of Arts & Sciences as well as several research institutes and centers.
The Branch Head manages one librarian, four staff members, and over a dozen student assistants. The successful candidate provides strategic guidance and direction for the unit, promotes leadership at different levels, cultivates an environment of inclusive excellence, and ensures quality user experiences. This individual also serves as liaison to the Department of Geological Sciences. A significant part of the responsibilities of this position includes research, creative work, and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.
Appointment and Salary:
Successful candidates will be appointed as full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty members. Depending on professional experience, appointment will be at the assistant professor or associate professor level. The minimum starting salary is $65,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA administered retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library program;
- Demonstrated knowledge with the research culture of science, including scholarly communication, publishing trends, and corresponding needs of faculty and researchers;
- Professional experience in an academic library or similar setting;
- Experience in management, supervision, or leadership
- Evidence of building effective working relationships with colleagues and other organizational partners
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and collegially in a collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students from culturally diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for a community of diversity and inclusion;
- Awareness of the changing role of academic libraries in higher education and an ability to envision innovative and creative methods of integrating and employing digital technologies;
- Potential for research, scholarly work, and professional service.
Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:
- Coursework or degree with concentration in earth sciences or related disciplines and/or significant experience within a library focusing on these disciplines;
- Demonstrated understanding of data literacy and research competencies in the sciences;
- Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with print and digital map collections;
- Experience conducting constituent needs analyses;
- Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills;
- Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and manage competing priorities;
- Achievement in research and creative work and professional service.
