Laboratory Assistant

Position Summary

This is full time position with benefits in the Student Health Center Laboratory. Will perform direct customer service by answering phones, routing calls,  taking messages and greeting patients walking into the laboratory; registers patient information into Athena EMR; performs routine venipuncture for patients seeking laboratory services; verifies insurance coverage; maintains   patient records; retrieves and distributes laboratory results to health care providers; completes and verifies forms; and monitors inventory/orders supplies.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a medical laboratory setting performing routine blood draws and documenting patient information utilizing electronic medical records and patient scheduling systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   Requires experience in the use word processing and database software; course in Phlebotomy; and Medical Terminology experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Completion of a healthcare assistant or medical administrative assistant certificate, college course work in a health care related field, or state certification as a medical assistant. Extensive knowledge of computer software including Microsoft products, Outlook email and calendar functions and  Athena EMR. Understanding of HIPPA/Fraud compliance. Critical decision making skills while under stress. Excellent interpersonal skills needed to interact with patients, physicians and nursing staff.
