Neurology Administration

The APP provides medical care to adult patients in the Department of Neurology's Sleep Medicine Follow- up clinics. This care is provided in collaboration with the supervising physicians. The APP will work with the Department of Neurology sleep medicine faculty in order to evaluate and provide ongoing treatment to patients presenting to clinics or facilities of Duke University Health System in accordance with established scope of practice as specified in North Carolina Board of Medicine Medical Practice Act NCGS Chapter 90 for Medicine and Allied Occupations.

Duties may include but are not limited to those listed below and may include other outpatient procedures or services as deemed appropriate by the supervising physician. Current position would be 8 clinic sessions located in the 1L clinic at the main Duke University Medical Center campus. Specific daily activities include:

Overall Responsibilities
• Record the history of present illness, past medical, family and social history
• Perform physical examinations
• Establish and follow plan of care in conjunction with MD
• Prescribe appropriate medications to a specialty pharmacy that will handle prior authorization and other necessary paperwork; Order refills as needed
• Patient and family teaching
• Order appropriate labs, tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed
• Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed
• Respond to patient messages via clinic, telephone, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system
• Review lab results in Maestro, communicate and interpret results
• Collaborate with nursing staff to complete patient paperwork including medication pre-certifications for insurance companies, durable medical equipment requests, disability paperwork, and handicapped permit applications Sleep Medicine Responsibilities
• The APP will see sleep apnea patients and patients with a variety of other sleep disorders.
• The APP will be expected to manage devices used for treatment of sleep apnea such as CPAP machines. Prescribe PAP machines and evaluate downloaded data.
• Position will be responsible for coordinating care of sleep medicine patients with the CPAP coordinator and DME companies.

Education
Work requires completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner program. State of North Carolina licensure is also required - OR - graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies

Experience
Work requires no previous experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
• Completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or PA Program at the Masters or Doctoral Level
• Current NC License with the NC Medical Board
• Current DEA registration
• Credentialing through Duke University Health System
• American Red Cross BLS and ACLS certification
• Adequate CME as outlined by NC Medical Board, Duke Credentialing Office and AANP
• Completion of required Duke modules (safety, HIPAA, etc.)
• Completion of Maestro training Scope of practice includes adults ages 18 and above.
