University of Missouri Veterinary Online Programs
Duties: Successful applicants will develop and deliver coursework in a fully online format using the Canvas LMS. Expectations for online instructors include:
1. Developing course content and appropriate delivery methods. Course objectives should be carefully developed, written and included with each module. These objectives should be the basis for readings, assignments, activities and assessments.
2. Securing access to a high-speed bandwidth connection for class activities, and testing all course-related technology, such as links to other sites prior to the start of the course.
3. Managing and teaching the class from start to finish. Instructors should follow the established and published course schedule, teach the course within the scheduled time frame, make and communicate schedule adjustments as necessary and provide each student with an equal opportunity to succeed.
4. Assuring that they possess the required skills and competencies for teaching online. Instructors should be operationally proficient in the course technology, be prepared with the skills to teach online, and be able to complete the required administrative tasks necessary to complete the course.
5. Being adequately familiar with the online course. The instructor is expected to be familiar with the syllabus including course milestones, due dates, and critical course activities, make changes to the syllabus as necessary and communicate the changes to students, review and be familiar with the course content, identify and report inaccurate course content, confusing information and/or instructions, broken links, and other course design issues, review the course teaching guide to gain an understanding of the intent/context of the course such as the author's teaching philosophy, content, learning activities, and assessments.
6. Insuring availability to the online learner for the duration of the course. The instructor should regularly access the course and notify students and appropriate administrative and technological units if unable to log into the course.
7. Managing course-related communications. Expectations of the students should be clearly communicated. Clearly state when and how often they will be interacting with the class and the students, and actively participate in course-related discussions and activities.
8. Communicating with and providing feedback to students. Responses should be provided within 12 hours and should include clear, concise feedback to explain the student's progress in achieving the course/lesson outcomes. Students should know when to expect graded feedback on assignments and exams.
9. Maintaining records of course transactions and communications. Records of all forms of communication with students should be kept. Student progress and grade information should be recorded and the final course grade should be posted according to the university schedule.
In order to be considered for an adjunct teaching position with MU Veterinary Online Programs, a candidate must be either:
DVM from an AVMA accredited college with a Master's degree and specialty board certification.
Be a graduate of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician program with a Master's degree and a VTS certification.
Some prior teaching experience (online, within a traditional classroom, teaching short courses, seminars, labs) is helpful but not required. Due to the nature of online education, candidates should be capable of interacting with, encouraging and distance mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
Salary is based on student class enrollment, type of class taught (number of credit hours, graduate vs. undergraduate course) and semester. Incentives are provided to instructors whose courses pass quality course reviews and who meet established standards for quality online teaching.
