Essential functions of this position:
This position functions as member of a clinical team in the provision of health care in a fast- paced college health center. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to obtaining extensive medical and psychiatric histories, assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute illness and those elements of primary medical care that are reasonable within the constraints of the nature of student health and the individual’s certification; providing psychiatric and medication evaluation for students; prescribing the appropriate therapies including medication; providing on-going medication monitoring, consulting with Counseling Center and Student Health Center staff regarding patient and client care; ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests including laboratory and radiologic tests; assisting with emergencies; documenting all pertinent data in patient’s electronic medical record; referring clients to physicians/specialist and/or other community resources as appropriate; and providing a holistic approach to patient care, including provision of patient education as appropriate.

N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” by the Joint Subcommittee.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Current CPR certification required
Must have the ability to respond to a broad range of medical problems with varying complexity and make the right decisions about treatment
Must have thorough knowledge of techniques in interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work both for general medical conditions and psychiatry
Must have familiarity with and experience in applying psychotropic medication regimes while under the supervision of a consulting psychiatrist
Must have thorough knowledge and ability to plan and monitor a regimen of care based on assessment and findings
Must have considerable knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods
Must have skills in performing clinical functions and in performing/assisting with routine minor surgical procedures
Must have the ability to examine patients and detect abnormalities; ability to record accurately and completely all information necessary to evaluate and formulate a care plan and the convey this to the supervising physician or psychiatrist as needed
Must have the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families and colleagues
Must be able to provide consultation to peers in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions
Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them

Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
Previous work experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a college/university setting strongly preferred

Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Nurse Practitioner Candidates: 1. Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” by the Joint Subcommittee; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; And 2. Must be board certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (PMH APRN) / psychiatric nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) at the time of hire or within twelve months of date of hire
OR
Physician Assistant Candidates: 1. Graduation and or completion of an educational program for Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and an active Physician Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. And 2. Must have a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry at the time of hire or within twelve months of the date of hire.
*All diplomas, degrees, licenses and certifications must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Recruitment Range: $80,000 - $85,000
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 81
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)

Work Days: Monday - Friday
Work Hours: 8:00AM - 5:00PM, occasionally must stay late to finish patient care
