Summary of Duties:
The Experimental Animal Laboratory building (EALB) in the Department of Animal Sciences at Washington State University maintains facilities for rodent housing and additional rooms to accommodate research animal species including but not limited to: rabbits, avian species, cats, dogs, sheep, cattle, goats, and pigs. This facility is under AAALAC accreditation and animals maintained in and research conducted at this facility must comply with University, state and federal regulations defining the care and use of animals. The individual selected to manage this facility will be responsible for maintaining accreditation status of the facility, assisting in and supervising the daily care and management of the animals, care and maintenance of the facilities, and preparation and maintenance of budgets and inventories. Additional responsibilities include: training and scheduling of student employees; animal management, care and scheduling; procurement of animals; maintenance of breeding colonies; ability to follow strict scientific protocols; data collection; monitoring animal health and compliance with approved procedures. The person in this position must have experience in handling diverse animal species and the ability to effectively communicate with scientists, students, regulatory staff and administration.

Required Qualifications:
Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or closely related field and three (3) years of experience in a laboratory animal care facility which has included at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and progressively responsible animal care experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist may be required within one (1) year of employment.
