Salary Range: $68,700.00 - $90,000.00 / Year
The Health Promotion Services (HPS) Director provides direct oversight of all health promotion activities that address priority student health issues and trends to support the mission of the university. Establishes a campus-wide agenda to advance the health of students and promote student development, retention and success. Collaborates with colleagues in Family Medicine and Public Health (School of Medicine) on projects, educational experiences and internships for students and possible teaching opportunities. With authority, innovates and advises on all aspects of campus health education efforts and long-range goals for programmatic development of health promotion and wellness services. Develops, implements and monitors the department’s strategic plan/goals/objectives and budget. Creates and provides data and reports to key campus stakeholders. Provides expert consultation on areas of health promotion and prevention to campus constituents.
The HPS Director provides leadership and cohesion to the Health Promotion Services Team. Serves on the campus leadership team for strategic planning and coordination of all wellness activities, impacting the campus. Possibly serves as a clinical faculty member in Family Medicine and Public Health in the School of Medicine. Functions as SHS management team member, and is responsible for providing expertise related to health behavior and health promotion and program evaluation. Provides strategic direction of Health Promotion activities in relation to assessed campus needs, system wide programs and national trends. Exercises high degree of autonomy to take action with authority in developing policies and planning programs in the area of student wellness. This position may conceptualize and implement wellbeing programming to UCSD faculty and staff in the future. Uses experience in disciplines of both public health, health psychology or behavior change and student development to design training and educational programs that impact student well-being using evidenced and theory based prevention efforts that achieve positive measurable outcomes. May teach courses at the undergraduate level if they are approved and pertain to HPS activities. Plans, implements and evaluates short- and long- range goals and objectives. Supervises health promotion professional and support staff including hiring, evaluating performance, mentoring, and overseeing work. Advises, as needed, all aspects of the Peer Education program by maintaining cooperative and responsive working relationships with the student volunteers, SHS and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff, the Colleges, other University departments and the community at large. Develops, monitors and projects the Health Promotion Services’ annual budget, income account activity and grant writing. Serves on SHW Committees and/or other campus committees as requested.
• Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Psychology, Health Behavior change or related field with a minimum of six (6) years of full-time professional health promotion work experience.
• Exceptional skill in designing and implementing evidence-based comprehensive health promotion programs to improve the overall health, well-being and academic performance of college students, including development, implementation, management and evaluation.
• Strong demonstrated knowledge of psycho-social and environmental influences on health behavior with ability to analyze high-risk health behaviors in a university population. Experience using bio-psycho-social, ecological and other health promotion models.
• Demonstrated skills in developing and implementing environmental and policy change activities.
• Proficient skills in marketing, social marketing, and public relations, budget and fiscal management skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of health promotion, health behavior change, health psychology, and population-based theories and models. Demonstrated knowledge and application of student development and learning theories and models.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education. Demonstrated knowledge to conceptualize health promotion in the context of higher education.
• Evidence of ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing and addressing health promotion needs of young/emerging adults, especially college students.
• Proven demonstrated Supervisory skills: 1. Demonstrated experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by staff and set performance standards, observing behavior, providing objective feedback, counseling, and implementing corrective action as needed to mediate disputes or otherwise help to resolve conflicts; and to provide effective leadership/coaching/mentoring. 2. Demonstrated experience and skill to assess staff capabilities and workloads and redistribute when necessary. 3. Demonstrated experience to provide leadership and cohesion to build and maintain a strong team. 4. Demonstrated skills to effectively train, supervise and mentor student employees and interns.
• Master’s or doctoral degree in relevant area including public health, health psychology, health behavior change or related area. Degrees in other fields such as student affairs may be considered with evidence of sufficient college health promotion experience.
• Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, and current clear TB test results and flu vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, titer test or blood test will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed.
• TB screening & flu vaccination is required annually.
• Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs such as evenings and weekends.
• Occasional travel may be required.
• Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events.
• Must have valid California Driver's License.
• Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required, because this position is listed as a mandated reporter under (CANRA).
