Essential functions of this position:
The position will maintain the trees and shrubs for university properties. The position is responsible for the independent observation, cultivation, maintenance and promotion of trees, shrubs, or a plant collections in an assigned program or geographical area of the university. The position observes and diagnoses structural and horticultural problems. Work includes corrective actions, pruning, spraying or removing plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures. Work may require knowledge of a unique and unusual collection of plants, impacting the cultivation and maintenance of these plants. This position maintains detailed records of plant species, including research on the design and maintenance of such plants. May prepare and maintain special beds; participate in landscape design and construction; supply and arrange special foliage for events; maintain indoor foliage; or promote knowledge and understanding of the plants. May serve as a technical expert or resource to others.
N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires North Carolina Pesticide License.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
All Physical Plant employees are considered essential personnel and may be asked to work outside of their normal schedule due to a weather event or other emergency situation resulting in university operations recovery efforts.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
A working knowledge of landscape maintenance and ability to operate large and small equipment. Ability to direct and learn new skills while on the job. A demonstrated understanding of the mixing and application of pesticides and herbicides and the ability to oversee application by other employees. Ability to identify potential issues and notify appropriate parties. The ability to guide and oversee the work of others and communicate issues and directives. Requires minimum of 4 years experience or equivalent education from a Horticulture/Turf based-program.
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Valid NC Drivers’ License
Requires North Carolina Pesticide license
Ability to obtain the NCDA Turf & Ornamental license within 90 days of hire
Ability to obtain Certified Arborist within 6 months of hire

Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
