Excelsior College, a regionally accredited,virtual,private,nonprofit institution of higher learning is seeking dynamic applicants for the position of Faculty Program Director in Public Administration and Legal Studies, in the School of Public Service. This position is a unique opportunity for an attorney with a graduate degree in public administration or related discipline. The successful candidate must have a passion for public service.


The Master of Public Administration (MPA) and undergraduate Legal Studies (LS) Faculty Program Director (FPD) is responsible for curricular development, oversight, and evaluation. The Faculty Program Director works under the supervision of the School of Public Service's associate dean and closely with the dean, other academic leaders, and staff across the college. The Master of Public Adminisrtation and Legal Studies Faculty Program Director ensures programs and instruction are student-centered and of the highest quality. The Faculty Program Director is responsible for the Public Administration and Legal Studies curricular portfolios, including course construction and maintenance. Recruitment, mentoring, management, and oversight of online teaching faculty are core responsibilities. The Faculty Program Director engages in sustained professional development, Excelsior College committee service, faculty governance, and in School of Public Service strategic planning. The Faculty Program Director should thrive in an online environment and have a high comfort level working with colleagues both on-site and at a distance. The Faculty Program Director collaborates with Strategic Partnerships and Alliances on student recruitment initiatives in the Albany, Washington, D.C., and other locations. Occasional travel is required.

This is a full time positions and is based at 7 Columbia Circle in Albany, New York.


The Faculty Program Director directs curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation by:
  • Serving in a leadership role while working with faculty, instructional designers, advisory committees, and outcomes assessment professionals in the development and continuous improvement of curricula,
  • Fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and engagement in curriculum development,
  • Engaging in evidence-based decision making and quality improvement at the program and course levels,
  • Fulfilling limited instructional responsibilities (i.e., expectation of teaching one Excelsior College course or equivalent per year),
  • Collaborating with the executive director of outcomes assessment and evaluation and other outcomes assessment professionals to develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes.

The Faculty Program Director oversees the administration of courses and supervises faculty by:
  • Supervising and mentoring adjunct teaching faculty and subject matter experts,
  • Coordinating the resolution of student issues,
  • Managing content within courses,
  • Identifying the need for faculty, defining the minimum criteria for candidates, interviewing and approving hires in collaboration with the Office of Human Resources,
  • Serving as the project manager for course development and revision,
  • Managing student learning resources,
  • Collaborating with others in strategic planning and budget management processes, including student recruitment in the Albany area, Washington, D.C., and other regions.


  • Juris Doctorate and a Masters in Public Administration or related discipline is required: Juris Doctorate and Ph.D preferred.
  • The new Faculty Program Director for the Master of Public Administration / Associate of Science in Para Legal Studies must have teaching experience, preferably on-line, and two or more years of experience in a professional setting.
  • A history of employee supervision is a plus, as is knowledge of the American Bar Association's program approval guidelines.
  • The successful candidate should work well in a group environment.
  • The position requires course and program construction under the direct supervision of the School of Public Service associate dean and in concert with the vision of the School of Public Service Dean.
  • The Faculty Program Director works closely with School of Public Service leadership, Strategic Partnerships and Alliances, and Excelsior Marketing in student recruitment activities in the Albany, Washington, D.C., and other regions.
