The Parichy Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia is searching for an exceptional candidate with a passion for animals and animal care to fill a Lab and Research Aide position. The main purpose of this position is to oversee daily operations in the Lab's fish facility, which maintains over 150 genetic stocks of zebrafish and related species in state of the art aquatic housing comprising more than 1800 tanks. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring the health and propagation of fish stocks as well as live food cultures using a variety of methods, identifying new genetic and transgenic stocks, maintaining fish-related mechanical systems, and certifying compliance with lab-specific standard operating procedures as well as federal requirements for the care and use of research animals. The position will require occasional work on evenings and weekends.
This position is restricted and has an end date of August 31, 2018.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The employee must be able to learn and perform routine maintenance on large, multi-tank, self-contained aquatic habitats, and be able to learn how to perform a basic mechanical inspection of the aquatic system. The employee must be an observant individual so that possible problems with the habitat systems, or any signs of poor health in the animals can be addressed.
Ability to follow set lab policies and procedures and adhere to regulatory guidelines in daily work.
Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication in daily interactions in order to work independently and as part of a team and provide direct support to leaders as needed; and to note observations, prepare materials and reports, and maintain records.
