Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC), a unit of the University System of Georgia, is accepting applications for a Police Sergeant. The College currently serves approximately 3200 commuting students on its beautifully landscaped campus located 10 minutes south of downtown Atlanta and 15 minutes north of Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport. 

This Police Sergeant is responsible for supervisory work performing and directing law enforcement activities for an assigned shift or specialized work unit. This position may be required to supervise a shift to include being responsible for all personnel assigned to their respective shift. This position may also have investigative and administrative responsibilities as directed by the operations commander. Independent judgment, initiative and understanding must be exercised in interpreting orders, rules and regulations, and in dealing with emergency situations. 

Work is performed in accordance with established rules, regulations, and instructions from superior officers who review the work through reports, conferences, and observation of police efficiency. When the Police Sergeant is acting as a shift supervisor; they will monitor patrol activities, responds to major, routine, and emergency calls for service. The Sergeant will provide field assistance to officers and make decision to call specialized personnel to major crime scenes as necessary. The Police Sergeant may supervise the work of personnel engaged in communications and the preparation and maintenance of a variety of police records and reports on an assigned shift. The Police Sergeant may perform/supervise dispatcher duties such as operating telephone and radio communication equipment and performing related clerical tasks. This position requires fast, efficient and accurate receiving, dispatching and processing of calls and messages to and from police vehicles and personnel. Recover stolen property; provide various types of public service and assistance to students, faculty, staff, guests and visitors on the College campus; provide money escorts. Prepare or direct the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports. Train subordinate personnel in acceptable patrol practices, methods, techniques and procedures; advises subordinate personnel on unusual, complex or difficult situation and perform related work as required. Campus Police work requires dedication to public service often made difficult by emotional or physical stress of events. Incumbents are required to be available for all shifts, work holidays, and are subject to be called in on short notice. Campus police officers are subject to applicable drug and alcohol testing policies.  

High School diploma or GED is required for this position. Two to three years' experience as a Police Supervisor is required. A valid Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate (POST PBLE) is required. Must be able to successfully qualify with the service weapon (initially and annually), have a valid Georgia driver's license with an acceptable driving record, and successfully pass the psychological prior to the final offer of employment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to assemble, analyze and evaluate information and data. Applicant must have excellent written and communication skills. Completion of some college level course work equivalent to an associate degree preferred. FTO Certification or Firearms Certification preferred.
