Department

National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL)

Responsibilities

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the development of X-ray diffraction capabilities in high magnetic fields. The successful candidate will work on the construction, testing and operation of a novel X-ray diffractometer to be integrated with the 25 T Florida Split Coil Magnet of the DC Field Facility at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL). The diffraction system is to be included in the NHMFL user program. The tasks of the postdoctoral researcher include but are not limited to the optimization of the setup test bed and the testing of system components, for instance, a rotating anode X-ray source and a pixel array detector. The candidate will contribute to the design and testing of a sample rotator, and will work on the optimization of the in-magnet cryostat. Other tasks include the calibration of the system with X-sources, sample preparation, experiments with various setup iterations, data analysis and publication. The main focus of the postdoctoral research lies on the developments related to the X-ray diffraction setup in the Florida Split Coil Magnet but active contribution to other existing research programs of the PI is encouraged.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a PhD degree in physics, material science or a related subject. Experience in X-ray diffraction or X-ray related imaging (at a synchrotron or table-top X-ray sources) is preferred. Very good hands-on laboratory skills are expected, experience with sample preparation, cryogenics, measurements in high magnetic fields, instrumentation development, and data analysis related to X-ray diffraction are a plus. Good command of the English language is a must. The candidate will be based at the NHMFL in Tallahassee, Florida, USA. Employment could start as soon as March 2017.
