Basic Function

Review and provide suggestions for institutional policy revision and development as related to student success. Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Services and other stakeholders to develop a plan to improve student success and retention and graduation rates; directly provide and supervise departmental efforts to assist students in resolving issues that prevent enrollment. Advise degree-seeking students regarding course options, degree requirements, school policies and other issues related to the educational process. Serve on the School’s First-Year Experience Committee and create a split advising model. Serve as a key member of Office of Student Services team, dedicated to support student progress towards degree.

This position will be directly involved in all aspects of student affairs services and programs implementation and assessment.  Additionally, the Assistant Director will work with colleagues, including the Director of Student Services, to strategically plan and grow new and innovative student services and offerings.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Development-Works with Director of Student Services to coordinate the development, evaluation and implementation of student success support goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives including advising, tutoring and disability services; assess consequences and outcomes of program initiatives; assess needs for student support programs and technology; identify and compile resource information.
  • Advising - Provide academic advising to degree-seeking students through one-one and group meetings, specifically advising students with higher-level advising needs (e.g. students facing suspension or dismissal, faculty issues, and student with significant personal concerns which are impacting their academic performance) as needed. Work with Registrar to coordinate degree-audits and assist students with course selection, course add/drops, course withdrawal, leaves of absence, reinstatements, transfer of credits, graduation requirements as well as course and/or instructor concerns. Holistically advise students on personal, health, financial, and academic issues related to student's overall experience and satisfaction.
  • Split Advising Model-The Assistant Director works with the Director of Student Services and Registrar on efforts related to implementing a split advising model focused on student support and retention, where the Office of Student Services partner with faculty advisors, experiential learning advisors, and staff to implement, track, and assess the advising process. Work with faculty to develop program specific advising rubrics and to create communication plans around important deadlines.
  • Academic Support- Manages Academic Support Coordinator; supervises the recruitment, hiring, and training of all academic tutors and implementation of academic support programs
  • Policy Development-Recommends internal policies, procedures and controls; assist with setting goals and assessing outcomes.  Assist in maintaining compliance with federal and state laws and policies, such as FERPA, Clery and others.
  • Conduct individual meetings with students regarding a variety of academic concerns, including academic coaching to support individual student learning and manage student needs, ADA accommodations and student advocacy
  • Assessment and Retention/Student Success - Assist in the development of a plan to improve student success and retention and graduation rates. Serve on First-Year Experience Committee. Direct intervention for at-risk students and on-going retention outreach, ensuring the best efforts are made to assist students in completing their education. Actively partner with the Office of Registration and Records in these efforts.  Direct coordinated efforts to retain first-time freshmen and maintain data on reasons why students do not persist.  Coordinate efforts with other members of the student support team to create transition plans for adult degree seekers, transfer students, International students, and other unique cohorts.
  • Accessibility of services-Create and enact strategies to promote and publicize services to all student and faculty populations; work efficiently and compassionately with students and faculty of diverse populations to facilitate student success; Manage Disability Services and work with the students applying for accommodations, mediate student complaints/concerns, evaluate accommodation requests, and implement requests
  • Committee/School Involvement-Serve as a Student Services representative on a number of work group and committees including First-Year Experience, Students of Concern, and others as assigned; Serve as Title IX investigator.
  • Community Presence-Assist with Departmental Programs such as Graduation, Orientation, and Campus Life Events. Evening and weekend commitments should be expected.

Position Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Minimum 3 years’ experience in a college or university setting, preferably in a Student Affairs, Academic Support, Advising or a closely related office serving the higher education community is required.
  2. Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and the community.
  3. Ability to communicate and work with a wide diversity of students.
  4. Excellent management, interpersonal communication, networking, presentation, and problem-solving abilities, combined with a collaborative work style.
  5. Bachelor’s degree in business, education, or a related field required.  Master’s degree preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  6. Working knowledge of student support technologies
  7. Knowledge of ADA guidelines with regards to disability services in higher education
