Assistant Dean of Students for Disability Services and Academic Success
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Academic Success, the Assistant Dean of Students, Disability Services and Academic Success is responsible for the coordination of a comprehensive academic support services for students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, neurological disorders, auditory and visual impairments, psychiatric disorders that impact the learning process, and temporary disabilities. In addition, the Assistant Dean will assist the Associate Dean with academic coaching and counseling for all students.
Direct, Coordinate, and Provide Disability Support Services
o Formulates and develops policies and procedures regarding services to students with disabilities.
o Conducts intake interviews, advises and orients student on accessing appropriate support services.
o Analyze disability related documentation including psychometric testing, medical documentation, psychological assessments, selfreports and/or other relevant information to determine eligibility for appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations.
o Planning, development and implementation of programs which focus on success and retention of students with disabilities.
o Maintain case files and confidential student record in accordance with FERPA and college policy.
o Interpret and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws as they apply to disability and postsecondary educational environments.
o Oversee implementation of academic accommodations for students, including making arrangements for and proctoring of alternative test taking, assistive technology (i.e., braille, books in alternate format, etc.), learning disability and autism/Asperger’s support services (i.e., peer advising). Coordinates academic accommodations with students and faculty.
o Monitors student's academic progress and coaches, counsels, and advises students on academic related issues.
o Work strategically toward increasing students’ independent functioning in preparation for life after college.
o Be knowledgeable about academic requirements, policies and major requirements to serve as a competent supplemental academic advisor.
o Work collaboratively with the Admissions Office to provide information and early identification of incoming students who identify as having a disability and serve as point person for those students.
o Work collaboratively with and serves as a liaison to the Claremont College Consortium Students with Disabilities Resource Center.
o Secures the necessary support for students with disabilities, such as sign language interpreters, readers, note takers, books on tape, and assistive technology.
o Establish a community referral network of psychiatrists, psychologists, and community agencies for students with disabilities.
o Provide verification for students requesting special accommodations on Professional and Graduate Standardized Exams.
o Assist students with study abroad options and accessibility to academic accommodation at the host university.
o Consult with Residential Services on disability related housing accommodations.
Educate the College Community on Disability Related Issues
o Develop and present campus-wide educational programs for faculty, staff, and students.
o Consult with faculty, staff, families, and students on different learning strategies and appropriate academic accommodation.
o Consult with other College health care professionals on disability related student issues.
o Participate in campus committees on disability related issues.
o Instruct and advise students, staff, and faculty on assistive technology for students with disabilities.
o Educate and advise the College on legal issues pertaining to federal compliance with ADA and Section 504 related to students.
o Contribute to the General Academic Success Services.
o Assist the Associate Dean of Students for Academic Success with the development and implementation of initiatives and programs for all students.
o Meet with students with academic concerns, issues, and questions.
o Provide academic coaching, counseling and monitoring for an overflow case load of all students.
Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 5 years of related work experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of best practice in disability services, universal design, academic support services, academic coaching models, retention initiatives, academic advising models, federal legislation, student mental health issues, needs of special populations.
Must be able to multi task and have proven organizational skills, sound judgment, superior interpersonal skills, and the ability to use tact and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
Must demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Must be able to follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects, tasks, duties and assignments.
Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal direction. Individual must have proven ability to prioritize concerns and respond accordingly using sound judgement.
Must be able to work cooperatively with others and must be able to receive and respond appropriately to constructive criticism. Must display a positive attitude.
Must be able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and any associated professional and/ or department specific software.
The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Classification and Status:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.
