Reporting to the Music Library Supervisor, this employee works as a public services staff member at the Music Library, retrieving, circulating, preparing and processing materials, and assisting users with directional and informational questions. This position actively participates in library committees and departmental meetings as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Work at the service desk executing circulation transactions.
  • Retrieving and re-shelving reserve items, media, circulating devices, and current periodicals.
  • Assisting patrons with catalog and database searching, and with finding items on the shelves.
  • Assisting patrons with photocopying and scanning equipment.
  • Assisting patrons with general inquiries.
  • Collecting fines and making change.
  • Preparing and maintaining course reserve lists.
  • Fielding telephone inquiries.
  • Monitoring and coaching student employees.
  • Monitoring the service desk and adjacent listening room areas to assure a positive patron experience.
  • Work in the general stacks shelving materials.
  • Retrieving materials for Prospector, Interlibrary Loan, and paging requests.
  • Performing shelf-reading and materials shifting as needed.
  • Must be able to lift books and push loaded book trucks and other materials in this department.
  • Must be able to bend down to access low shelves and use footstools to reach high shelves.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience using computers in a work environment as well as experience using standard office productivity software.
  • Ability to learn new computer systems as needed.
  • Operate and troubleshoot office technology such as photocopiers, printers, and computer workstations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music.
  • Knowledge of music literature and reference / research tools in music.
  • One year of clerical and/or library experience in a public service position.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress subject classification.
  • Knowledge of library routine and procedures.
