This position will support a Laboratory strategic initiative to develop the next generation of quasi-symmetric (QS) stellarator designs. Advances in stellarator physics and engineering over the past few years have created opportunities to make substantial improvements in the reactor potential of quasi-symmetric stellarators. To capitalize on these advances and assess their potential requires the development of new stellarator configuration designs (coils and plasma) that are optimized to satisfy attractiveness criteria such reduced turbulent transport, self-consistent divertor, simpler coil geometries, and efficient maintenance. The main tool for generating such configurations is the STELLOPT suite of codes.
The main job functions are :
- Code development and testing to incorporate new optimization capabilities into the STELLOPT suite of codes.
- Development, using STELLOPT and other physics analysis tools, of improved stellarator plasma and coil configurations, targeting mission goals subject to constraints, for near-term experiments and long-term reactor embodiments.
Experience in operating and making improvements to large physics codes.
Understanding of fusion plasma equilibrium, stability, transport, and divertor physics sufficient to independently interpret code results and propose next steps.
Ability to work as a member of a team and to communicate effectively in team meetings as well as conference presentations and journal articles.
Ph.D. in plasma physics or related disciplines
Evidence of experience in operating and making improvements to large physics codes.
