The Security Officer 4 is responsible for serving the public by maintaining the physical security of persons and property at the University of Wisconsin. Under the supervision of a Security Supervisor or Police Sergeant, the Security Officer 4 patrols all University buildings and grounds, both on foot and bicycle and by vehicle, providing emergency assistance as needed. The officer observes and reports any situation that could cause injury or loss to the University, its faculty, staff, students, or visitors, He/she ensures the rules and laws applicable to the campus are effectively enforced by directing compliance, issuing warnings, and reporting violations to the appropriate authorities. Route officers are often the first responders at fires, hazardous materials spills, and at other incidents that present significant inherent risks. They assist with initial entry into endangered buildings, assess dangerous conditions and participate in the evacuation of building occupants when required. They are frequently assigned to maintain both inner and outer perimeters to protect the public during emergency responses. They respond to intrusions or access anomalies in restricted areas.
The Security Officer 4 assists law enforcement officers with many activities including direct patrols with Police Officers in higher crime areas or areas of heightened concern due to recent criminal activity. They provide high level access control and building monitoring, troubleshoot problems with very complex access control systems (e.g. biometric reader, CCTV, DVR, REX devices, etc.) that if compromised could result in a substantial risk to millions of dollars and years? worth of research and could delay the development of new medical techniques, engineering technologies, and other benefits of cutting edge research that affect millions of people nationwide. They are responsible for and are involved in the protecting of life and property at the UW in the context of the threat posed by international terrorism. They perform routine and non-routine checks of facilities to prevent any breach of security and the unfortunate release of animals and/or sensitive research materials to the media. They also conduct special security surveys of various buildings and residential facilities across campus; compose reports of their findings and recommendations; provide presentations regarding those findings and steps that that can be taken to improve the safety of the properties and their occupants. They also perform similar work in coordination with the Madison Police Department for buildings off campus such as fraternity and sorority houses in the adjacent community. In addition, Security Officers play a key role in working with Emergency Management staff to facilitate the completion of Occupant Emergency Plans (OEP), as well as implementing the department Continuity of Operations Plan and the University Crisis Response Plan when they are required.

This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The schedule is determined by Department needs and policy. The schedule rotates based on a pre-determined schedule and includes working occasional holidays and weekends. Occasional work beyond or outside hours determined by contract may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.
