(Job #17-68) Instructional Support Assistant I (ISA I), Gallery Assistant, $14.23-23.09/hour. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a temporary, intermittent hourly, non-benefitted position in the Department of Art. The anticipated assignment will be 15 hours per week during the academic year.

 

General Description: Under lead oversight of the Art Department gallery & museum studies faculty, the incumbent performs support services for the daily operations of gallery lab activities and other tasks as directed by the Art Department gallery & museum studies faculty.

 

Duties: Under direction of the gallery Director, supports operations of the gallery studio/shop lab facility; hang & arrange art for exhibition; makes labels and text blocks for art on exhibit; maintain inventory and storage areas of all tools, supplies and equipment in the facility and assists in procuring the supplies necessary for exhibit production. Train and monitor student assistants and gallery sitters; help students to maintain a clean, safe work environment for students & visitors. Provide instructional support for students engaged in gallery/museum activities. Under specific guidelines, maintains database of art in the gallery collection, complete gallery forms, & assist in maintaining gallery exhibition records. Compose basic correspondence to communicate with media, artists and lenders. React quickly in a rapidly changing work environment with multiple demands.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving studies in museum & gallery practices, studio art procedures and art history.

 

Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills: Knowledge of procedures and practices related to providing support services; knowledge of procedures and practices related to ordering, issue and inventory; ability to follow all Art Department gallery & museum guidelines, policies and gallery & museum studies faculty direction in performing related tasks; ability to learn quickly the names, uses, and care of common types of materials, supplies, and equipment used in gallery studio/shop lab facility; ability to inspect materials, supplies, and equipment to determine their suitability for various uses; ability to prepare and follow schedules for providing services to students; ability to count and perform simple arithmetic calculations; ability to read and write at a level suitable for performance on the job; ability to quickly assess tasks and prioritize projects to aid completion in a timely and efficient manner. Preferred Knowledge and Skills: Museum & Gallery Practices Certificate, or equivalent, and understanding and use of Filemaker Pro software. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
