Dedicated professionals are needed to meet the engineering demands of Facilities and Services (F&S) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. F&S employs 1,400 people and provides planning, capital programming, utility production and distribution, design, construction, construction management, environmental compliance, operation and maintenance, and other services for nearly 18,000,000 square feet of buildings and 1,000 acres on the UIUC campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Provide controls and support for operation, programmatic maintenance, and planning of campus utility production plants and distribution systems. Will be required to perform field inspection and verification of systems in production plants and distribution systems climbing ladders and stairs in unconditioned and dusty environments. Will be required to become qualified to use personnel protective equipment (PPE) to enter and inspect confined spaces.
  2. Provide management and oversight on utility system projects including: plant/system controls, utility metering, data reporting and collection systems, and design of complex utility systems.
  3. Assist with the development of safe and efficient operating schemes for production and distribution systems including accurate system documentation and configuration control. This should include instruction, to operators and others, on safe and efficient operation of utility systems.
  4. Provide troubleshooting support for existing component and system problems.
  5. Assist with the development of computer modeling applications, economic and cost estimating analysis, analysis of engineering data, and consulting with personnel from many different University and campus units about utility issues.
  6. Performs material condition inspection of controls and electrical systems to monitor system readiness to provide reliable utilities to the campus.
  7. Provide critical review of utility aspects of new construction and major remodeling plans developed by architects and engineers for campus capital and facility renovation projects.
  8. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with University, campus, and departmental officials/staff to promote the success of established University and F&S objectives and goals.
  9. Serve on University, campus, and departmental committees/teams as required.
  10. Other duties or projects as assigned.
  11. May require occasional non-working hour call outs, for unscheduled utility outages or problems with distribution or production systems.

Position Requirements and Qualifications


Required: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or a related field.


Required: Experience working in a utility or industrial plant, or related field. Experience working with industrial Digital Control Systems.

Preferred: Demonstrated training and experience with Emerson Delta V 2.

Training, Licenses or Certifications:

Required: A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office desktop products, project planning software, and utility system software such as Etap, KY Pipe, Heat Map, or similar products.

Preferred: Professional Engineer licenses in the State of Illinois, or E.I.T. status with progression towards a PE license.

Knowledge Requirements:

Required: Proficient in the design and support of industrial digital control systems. Ability to prioritize work with disciplined time management to thrive in a multi tasking and dynamic environment, dealing with multiple utility systems including electric, steam, chilled water, water, waste water, and natural gas. Excellent communication skills are required for maintaining good relations with all members of the campus community, under a wide variety of circumstances. Ability to communicate complex, technical information/data in a user-friendly format is essential. Demonstrated managerial skills to direct, supervise, and oversee engineering projects both large and small. Familiarity with and ability to function in a unionized, Civil Service environment is preferred. Ability to clearly demonstrate leadership traits that include the desire to lead, vision with aggressive goals, concern and respect for the individual, integrity, credibility/dependability, accountability, loyalty and a willingness to work in a team environment.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible Academic Professional Position. Anticipated start date is as soon as possible following the closing date. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
