Under the direction of the Associate Director, manages the coordination, public relations, and day-to-day activities of the Beyond Access (BA) and HuskyGPS programs. The BA program provides an opportunity for students to work smarter, not harder, in a competitive academic environment while also preparing for life beyond college. Students enrolled in BA work closely with a trained Strategy Instructor (SI) to design and customize their program based on their individual goals and learning profile. HuskyGPS is an online summer program that provides new UConn students (First Year and Transfer) an opportunity to learn about the University and facilitate a smooth transition by helping students create an individualized plan based on their needs and assisting them in identifying campus resources. The focus of this position is the administration of the programs.

  1. Interviews, hires, trains and supervises graduate students and professional staff who provide strategy instruction within the Beyond Access program for students with disabilities; assigns tasks and sets work priorities; evaluates performance.
  2. Manages a caseload of assigned students within the Beyond Access program and provides one-on-one strategy instruction in the areas of time management, memory and concentration, study skills, test, organization and notetaking strategies and other academic skill areas and/or social areas to promote student development and self-determination in social, emotional, academic and daily living realms; encourages and promotes goal setting with students.
  3. Engages in public relations and promotional activities for the Beyond Access and HuskyGPS programs; implements recruiting and promotional strategies; creates promotional materials, such as posters, postcards and brochures.
  4. Plans and organizes workshops, courses, curricula and training materials, in accordance with Beyond Access program goals.
  5. Serves as a liaison between the Beyond Access program and other University offices, external organizations and the public; coordinates communications with prospective students and families regarding services offered by the Beyond Access.
  6. Plans and implements services and activities within the HuskyGPS program in accordance with program goals and objectives, and supervises the day-to-day delivery of program content. Supervises graduate and undergraduate employees.
  7. Composes and edits standard correspondence and reports containing information that requires thorough knowledge of Center policies, procedures and data sources.
  8. May assist in planning and carrying out related support activities for CSD staff, such as accommodations (i.e., final exams), meetings, conferences, interviews; makes all necessary arrangements and coordinates details.
  9. May be responsible for special projects or operations, which may be ongoing and require planning, coordination and supervision.

  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  2. Four to five years professional experience with working with individuals with cognitive disabilities in high school or higher education, such as learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
  3. Demonstrated experience identifying strategies and training students on the use of strategies to address functional limitations, including learning strategies, social skills development strategies, and executive function related strategies.
  4. Demonstrated experience and familiarity with the use and applicability of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities.
  5. Extensive knowledge, gained through education and/or experience, of the unique needs of persons with disabilities, including knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and its amendments, and other relevant state and federal legislation.
  6. Excellent written and oral communication skills to work effectively with students, parents, UConn staff, and secondary school personnel/consultants.
  7. Computer literacy.
  8. Strong supervisory skills.

  1. Master's degree in special education or related field.
  2. Experience working with students with disabilities in higher education through a Disability Services Office and/or student support program.
  3. Experience working with graduate student staff.


Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a part time, 10-month position with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2017. This is an end-date position, which is subject to renewal annually based upon funding.

This appointment may require weekend or evening hours due to the nature of the Center's work.
