The Human Resources Generalist manages the day-to-day operations of the Human Resource office. The HR Generalist manages the administration of the human resources policies, procedures and programs. The HR Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: departmental development, Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), employee relations, training and development, benefits, compensation, organizational development, and employment.
Duties of a HR Generalist may include the following but are not limited to:Recruiting: Coordinating search processes including: advertising, posting and interviewing applicants, referrals, reference checks and verifications; ensuring AA/EEO compliance; work with staff to coordinate new appointments, including required notices and letters; interpreting Department of Civil Service, SUNY and other regulatory agencies policies and procedures; pre-screen and interview applicants for non-competitive and labor class vacancies in the CSEA BU; make contingent offer of employment; select candidates that reflect Stony Brook Medicine’s values and it’s patient and family centered care model.Onboarding/New Employee Transition: Assist new employees and department leadership with transition of the new employee into the department utilizing best practices; utilize HR data to proactively support effective and productive employee transition to new department.Leave Management: Review leave requests from employees in service group (classified and unclassified) and make leave decisions consistent with the applicable collective bargaining agreements and law, FMLA and other leave law, regulation or policy; manage and coordinate Return to Work; work with Timekeeping on Workers’ Comp; assess requests for Fitness for Duty Exams.Corrective Feedback: Provide proactive advice to supervisors on counseling employees and evaluating potential disciplinary matters for employees covered by the Taylor Law; provide guidance to service group management on employee issues; assist in reinforcement of best practices associated with corrective employee feedback; review all counseling memorandums in service group and provide constructive, timely feedback; make appropriate referrals to Labor Relations; work with department on correct and timely use of classified service 6 month evaluations.Performance Management: Assist departments with alignment of employee performance expectations to department and organizational goals; provide constructive and proactive feedback regarding the performance programs and evaluation.Human Resources: Incumbent will be assigned project, data management, supervision or other related tasks that support the generalist team, HR and the hospital.Cover other Generalists when needed.
Required Qualifications: BA/BS. One to three years professional experience in Human Resources; working knowledge and experience in one or more functional areas in Human Resources. Prior experience working with data and benchmarks to achieve goals; strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong computer skills and data analysis skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business or Health-care Administration or related field. SHRM PHR Certification. Prior experience effectively working in a high volume recruitment area conducting all facets of recruitment; effective, proactive employee relations experience; public sector experience; health-care experience; demonstrated experience working on workplace diversity initiatives.
