Position Overview

Working under the direction of the Cancer Center Director and Patient Advocacy, the incumbent will be responsible for providing patient advocacy and community outreach for the Cancer Center in a variety of methods. This will require traveling to various community centers, churches and other groups to provide talks on cancer prevention, screening, treatment, etc. The incumbent will also consult with patients in the outpatient cancer center, and provide guidance and assistance as necessary to help facilitate treatment.


Duties of the Cancer Outreach Liaison may include but are not limited to:

  • Support groups – Assess needs for new support groups. Maintain statistics and database. Coordinate with facilitators and keep group members informed of all SB resources. Attend meetings as needed.
  • Maintain working relationship with physicians, staff and community resources.
  • Work on the planning and coordinating committee for multiple community and cancer center events, including but not limited to NCSD, Community Update, and Lung Cancer Vigil.
  • Work closely with social work, nurse navigators, financial counselors to provide psychosocial support and lifestyle needs of the patient.
  • Work with multidisciplinary team to ensure that Cancer Center meets all required standards for accreditation from various governing bodies.
  • Coordination of transportation and other patient amenities and resources as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Patient Advocacy.


Qualifications:

Required: Associate Degree in related field. Experience with patient education and/or advocacy and community outreach.Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to build relationships with patients, family members, insurers, pharmaceutical companies, cancer organizations and grant-making entities. Must have ability to relate to people from other cultural backgrounds. Ability to report to several supervisors, must be highly organized with attention to detail. Must be able to work independently, solve problems and make decisions within scope of authority.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Experience working with support groups. Fluency in Spanish.
