Position Summary

The International Student Advisor will advise J-1 international students/scholars and F-1 students on immigration, personal, academic, and cross-cultural matters. The advisor serves as a part of the core team administering MSU's Exchange Visitor Program; this includes: serving as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the J visa program and assisting with SEVIS compliance; reviewing J-1 visa applications for new or continuing Exchange Visitors; working as an overall part of a team to support international students and scholars. The advisor will interact frequently, conduct outreach,and train MSU academic units seeking to host J-1 Exchange Visitors. Please note that U.S. Government Regulations require Alternate Responsible Officers and Designated School Officials to hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Advise international students and scholars on immigration, personal, academic, and cross-cultural matters
  • Assist with MSU's compliance process with SEVIS including assisting with SEVIS database management for record keeping, reporting, and overall compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations
  • Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the Exchange Visitor visa program and a Designated School Official (DSO) for the F student visa program
  • Assist with immigration programming and outreach
  • Assist with support of the International Sponsored Student Program
  • Perform other duties as assigned and works as an overall part of a team to support international students and scholars

 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work in Education and Guidance Counseling with relevant course work in English, a Foreign Language and/or International Studies; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in international student/scholar advising, a familiarity with immigration regulations and proficiency in a foreign language; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

A master’s degree from an accredited institution with significant international experience that may include studying, living or working abroad, or interacting with international students; significant experience interpreting F and J visa regulations; two years’ experience advising international students/scholars; excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated experience working as part of a team; experience in a service-oriented work environment.
