ASSIST DIR, PROGRAMS

Scope of Responsibilities:
Assist the Director with management and coordination of programs and activities in the Duke Arts Center. The Assistant Director for Visual and Studio Arts will provide support for visual artists in the Arts Center and coordinate studio access, usage and maintenance. The Arts Center staff will work closely with departments and university presenters to host artists in residence who offer master classes, critique sessions, screenings, and other student-focused interactions.
Duties: % of Effort
Administer assigned program areas including, but not limited to, planning, coordinating and implementing operations and activities such as classes, workshops, advertising, special events, staffing, financial and general business matters. 20%
Work with Director of the Duke Arts Center, the Vice Provost for the Arts and stakeholders to oversee programming in the four Visual Art studios in the Duke Arts Center (painting studio, maker space, gallery/critique space, all-purpose space). 20%
Work with staff and stakeholders to develop and implement application process for such residencies and projects. Provide leadership for applications review process. Provide operational and logistical support for programs with resident artists, student residencies or long term projects. 15%
Promote the use of the Visual Art spaces through outreach to stakeholders including faculty and students. Ensure the Duke community understands the purpose of these spaces and how they can be used. Liaise with Duke art departments so they are fully engaged with the Visual Arts programing. Collaborate with the other programs in the building to create and maintain an active and dynamic creative environment for the whole university. 10%
Working with staff in the Arts Center, Vice Provost for the Arts and Student Affairs, coordinate CASTs (Creative Arts Support Teams) Program to provide support and manpower for the Arts Center Visual Arts programs. In cooperation with UCAE staff, coordinate the DukeCreate workshops for students at the Arts Center and Arts Annex. 15%
Work with Director and Arts Center staff tocreate policies and procedures regarding departmentaloperations to facilitate effective resource utilization, standardized policies, and consistent information. Maintain the visual arts studios so that the spaces function at a professional level. 10%
Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of student staff positions. Supervise student employees in support of Arts Center programs and events. 10%
• Education: Bachelor's Degree in Arts, Education, business or related degree required. Master's degree in a relevant field strongly preferred.
• Experience: Work generally requires a minimum of 2 years of progressively increasing responsibility in managing complex organizations and related functions for arts facilities and operations. Prior college and university experience strongly preferred. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Specific

• Experience in managing arts studios and facilities. • Ability to develop and manage budgets; • Excellent organization skills and the ability to manage concurrent projects within established guidelines; • Previous management experience required; • Strong communication skills - verbal, written and interpersonal; • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, with a commitment to collaboration; • Ability to problem solve at many levels; • Valid NC driver's license required.
