Job Description for Pain Clinic - Augment a physician's ability to provide medical services to patients; collect and document clinical and research data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations and provide direct patient care services.

Work Performed
# Provide care to patients acting as an assistant to physicians following established standards and practices.
# Conducts thorough medical histories, performs physical examinations, initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of pain to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan with direct review by a physician.
# Must be able to work with autonomy and under direction of supervising physician.
# Performs clinical assessments on perioperative patients, including management of peripheral nerve and epidural catheters.
# Interrogation and management of spinal intrathecal infusion devices.
# Provides information and answers routine questions of patients regarding pain management issues
# Educates patients regarding their pain, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
# Performs appropriate record keeping, completes appropriate patient medical chart, transcribes lab data and routine correspondences.
# Consults with attending physician and members of the primary management team as appropriate.
# Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.
# Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior.
# Demonstrates compassion and professionalism and a commitment to excellent patient care.
# Supervise and review the work of lower rated employees advance practice nurses; train new personnel.
# Participate in teaching medical students and residents in techniques and procedures, which are unique to specific clinical setting.
# Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education
Work requires a bachelor's degree in Health Science and a Physician Assistant Certificate of Registration with the North Carolina Medical Board or be certification eligible, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants -OR- completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner program. State of North Carolina licensure is also required.
