Position Summary: The Research Associate will work as an integral part of the Sumner lab at the UNC Nutrition Research Institute and will serve as the Mass Spectrometry Lab Manager for Metabolomics Research. Principle Functions: Mass Spectrometry Lab Manager for Metabolomics Research - Develops and manages methods and workflows for mass spectrometry. Maintains positive working relationships with collaborators. Identifies funding opportunities, participates in proposal development, and writes sections for manuscripts. Data Analysis Research - Advises basic, clinical, and translational scientists on study design. Monitors quality control of metabolomics data analysis. Collaborates with biostatistician to analyze metabolomics data and integrate with other data streams. General Lab - Receives samples, logs inventory, provides general laboratory cleanup, orders supplies, and schedules studies.

Education Requirements: Post-Baccalaureate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or other field relevant to developing and applying mass spectrometry methods required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 5 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualification and Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in development of mass spectrometry methods, application of mass spectrometry, and analysis of mass spectrometry data. This position requires strong critical thinking skills, self-direction and motivation, project management skills, effective time management, and organizational skills. Computer skills required: Experience working with Waters, Thermo, and/or LECO software for mass spectrometry. Must be able to work in Kannapolis, NC (20 miles from Charlotte and 2 hours from UNC Chapel Hill main campus).
