Degree and Area of Specialization:
A bachelor's in science in microbiology, bacteriology or related biological science required. A masters or Ph.D in microbiology, bacteriology or related biological science preffered.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Seven minimum required years of expereience in a professional or laboratory setting.
Experience with microscopic examination, prefers experience with immunofluorescence and differential interference contrast.
Experience with molecular methods.
Experience with enzymatic methods for drinking water samples.
Experience with quality control/quality assurance in a laboratory.
Experience with identifying bacterial organisms.
Experience writing standard operating procedures.
This position functions independently, under very general supervision, as a lead microbiologist for the Water Microbiology Unit. Independently perform and interpret the results of routine and non-routine microbiological analyses, review the quality control testing to assure accuracy of the tests; develop and implement new microbiological methods such as molecular methods; and conduct laboratory research related to water and environmental microbiology. Work may include teaching and training at all levels, including high level professional staff, nonprofessional staff and students; and direct special project analyses, test development, or independent research, especially in molecular methods. Represent the laboratory on technical study or advisory committees. This position provides consultation to Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health Services, County Health agencies, US Geological Survey, other state and federal agencies, industry, private laboratories and general public. Represent the laboratory at professional functions including symposia and colloquia. Guide and review the work of other professional and technical staff. Work hours for this position are 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with weekend and holiday work on a rotational basis.

Expert knowledge of laboratory principles and practices.
Expert knowledge of microscope based methods for microbiological applications.
Expert knowledge of microscopic examinations using immunofluorescence (FA), 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), and differential interference contrast (DIC).
Expert knowledge of immunomagenetic separation (IMS).
Expert knowledge of procedures used for isolation of waterborne bacteria, parasites and potential emerging pathogens.
Expert knowledge of basic biochemical tests used in identification of coliform bacteria.
Expert knowledge of what types of bacteria are important from various types of environmental samples.
Expert knowledge of molecular methods for water microbiology such as qPCR.
Knowledge of effective communication skills for teaching of laboratory procedures.
Knowledge of accurate and organized recordkeeping.
Knowledge of scientific approach in problem solving.
Customer service skills.
Ability to distinguish all the colors of the spectrum.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
A valid driver's license acceptable to UW Risk Management to collect research samples.
