Temporary Lecturer Positions - Issues & Writing
2017-2018 Academic Year
Fall 2017 (September 28 - December 15, 2017)
ART 100 Issues in Art, Sexuality and the Culture Wars
Art and artists have played an overt role in the Culture Wars. Controversies over the future of the NEA and over the subject matter of exhibitions at tax-payer funded art museums have placed artistic expression in the cross-hairs of Culture War partisans. The place of sexuality in American public life stands at the center of many controversies. Resolving these controversies in the political system often created legal challenges from the other side, as progressives and liberals grapple to define "the soul of America." This course will focus on the intersection of sexuality with the Culture War and on how art, artists, and the right of artistic expression have shaped particular Culture War moments of the past.
Art 101W Artists as Writers
Contemporary art practice involves text, as final form or an integral element. Many contemporary artists consider writing as essential to their practice. Covers historical and contemporary uses of text and image as well as artists' writing.
