IHP Literacy and Language CAS Program Director (FACULTY)

Major Responsibilities:
This is a faculty and administrative position in the Certificate of Advanced Study in Language and Literacy program housed in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. This program offers an accelerated route to the Reading Specialist License in Massachusetts. It is a 20 graduate credit program, which attracts experienced educators who seek specialized training in reading, language, and literacy education. This position is responsible for increasing the visibility of the program outside the Institute. This individual works closely with faculty members, external relations, marketing, admissions and the office of student affairs within the Institute. Research/scholarship in reading/literacy is expected.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration and Advising (60%)
  • Recruitment of Students
    • Create and revise program materials (e.g., brochure & website content, email correspondence, etc.) for dissemination of information to prospective students; initiate information sessions at public and private schools;
    • Respond to student inquires about the program;
    • Serve as chair for CAS admissions and serve on the CSD admissions team;
  • Maintain Records
    • Collaborate with Admissions and Registrar to articulate and standardize policies and procedures (i.e., schedule courses, create new sections, communicate with students around academic/administrative policies, etc.);
    • Create and maintain permanent files for tracking student progress;
    • Create and track all practicum documents in compliance with Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE);
    • Develop and maintain student and faculty policies and procedures manuals;
  • Liaison with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
    • Collaborate with CSD Faculty Liaison to DESE;
    • Prepare, with assistance from colleagues, documents required by DESE for re-approval of the Institute's status as an approved program provider to for the Reading Specialist license;
  • Envision the future of the Program
    • Lead the CSD Department in moving the CAS Program into new markets, including on-line offerings;
  • Other Tasks
    • Collaborate with CSD and Office of Enrollment Management to plan Orientations, Graduation and End-of Program Celebration events;
    • Endorse program completers for reading license;
    • Establish and maintain clinical placements and relationships with public schools for both CAS students and literacy concentrations in the CSD program;
    • Academic advising of Reading CAS students.
    Teaching (15%)
  • Conduct three site visits per practicum for each student in compliance with DESE guidelines;
  • Teach courses in area of specialty.
  • Service (10%)
  • Appropriate Program and Institute committee participation as determined and assigned by Department Chair;
  • Establish a national presence in professional associations and conferences.
  • Research/Scholarship (15%)
  • Scholarly presentations at Professional Conferences;
  • Scholarly publications in area of specialty.



  • Qualifications

    Education & Experience Qualifications:
    • Expertise in language and literacy development and disorders in school-aged children;
    • Doctorate with a concentration in literacy and language; background in speech-language pathology and special education desirable;
    • Demonstrated experience as an administrator and leader;
    • Three or more years of clinical or academic experience;
    • Outstanding oral and written communication skills;
    • Experience teaching/supervising graduate students preferred;
    • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a reading specialist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.


    Skills / Abilities / Competencies:




    Administrative Skills-
    Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and computer skills. Able to lead teams. Financial planning and program development.

    Technical Skills-

    Advanced clinical experience with reading and related language disorders.
